The Fear to Overcome All Fears

Sis Melinda Song

INTRODUCTION

According to an ancient legend, a man driving one day to Constantinople was stopped by an old woman who asked him for a ride. He took her up beside him and, as they drove along, he looked at her and become frightened and asked, "Who are you?" The old woman replied: "I am Cholera"

Thereupon the peasant ordered the old woman to get down and walk; but she persuaded him to take her along upon her promise that she would not kill more than five people in Constantinople. As a pledge of the promise she handed him a dagger, saying to him that it was the only weapon with which she could be killed. Then she added: "I shall meet you in two days. If I break my promise, you may stab me."
In Constantinople, 120 people died of the cholera. The enraged man who had driven her to the city, and to whom she had given the dagger as a pledge that she would not kill more than five, went out to look for the old woman, and meeting her, raised his dagger to kill her. But she stopped him, saying: "I have kept my agreement. I killed only five. Fear killed the others."

This legend is a true parable of life. Where disease kills its thousands, fear kills its tens of thousands. So what are you afraid of? Here are top 10 phobias compiled by LiveScience Managing Editor, Jeanna Bryner. See if you identify with any of them.

People can become afraid of the strangest things, like Friday the 13th or walking under the ladder. But 365 times in Scripture, God tells us "Do not fear" or "Fear not" or something similar. That is one time for every day of the year.

Today we are going to look at a fear that God wants us to have. It is commonly referred to as the fear of the Lord and I would like to entitle this message as “The Fear To Overcome All Fears.” Let us turn to Luke 12:1-12.

1 Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so that they were trampling on one another, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, saying: “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. 2 There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. 3 What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs.

4 “I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. 5 But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after your body has been killed, has authority to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him. 6 Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. 7Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

8 “I tell you, whoever publicly acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man will also acknowledge before the angels of God. 9 But whoever disowns me before others will be disowned before the angels of God. 10 And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.

11 “When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend
yourselves or what you will say, 12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say.”

The main text of this message will be drawn from verses 4 to 7.

Webster’s dictionary defines fear as “an unpleasant often strong emotion caused by anticipation or awareness of danger.” According to H.P. Lovecraft, an American author who achieved posthumous fame through his influential works of horror fiction, “The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear.” Hence the popularity of horror movies and our delight in scaring ourselves when we go on roller-coaster rides.

Several Greek words are used for fear in the New Testament with various depth of meaning related to fear. Phobos, a general term for fear or terror is the word used in this text and it is the same root word from where we get our word ‘phobia.’

Among the lessons that we can learn from our passage today is…

I.     We should not fear man

“I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more” (v. 4)

Verses 1-3 link with the previous section on the Pharisees. Jesus warned his disciples to guard against hypocrisy because the day will come when all things concealed or hidden will all be revealed.

The original meaning of the Greek word ποκριταί (hypokritai) means “stage actors.” They are just acting a role. But when no one is looking (i.e. the audience is gone) they revert to their true self, which is some one quite different. Jesus in his teaching here describes hypocrisy as the sad state of a person who reduces himself to being an actor on a stage.

a. The fear of man

There are many people who live their life in a desperate search for human approval and applause. They discern their dignity and worth, not from God, (who is a stranger to them), but from what other human beings think of them

Many young people, due to peer pressure, will engage in dangerous and unhealthy practices to win approval. engage in sexual activity before marriage, and do many risky things. One weekend I visited my daughter in KL. The whole student house was empty because everyone was out clubbing and they would only be back on Sunday. If she had sought the approval of her friends she would have succumbed to being in the in crowd and joined them as well.

Adults too will often compromise core principles in order to fit in and be liked, gain promotions or earn access to a certain group. Christians will hide their faith, and act differently when they are in secular company in order to win approval.

Of all the memorials in Westminster Abbey there is not one that gives a nobler thought than that inscribed on the monument to Lord Lawrence—simply his name, with the date of his death, and these words: "He feared man so little, because he feared God so much."—Sunday School Chronicle.

b. The fear of persecution

In verses 8-12, we find that the disciples might be tempted to a different kind of pretence, that of hiding their allegiance to Jesus out of fear. Dr. Roland Leavell in his book, Evangelism: Christ’s Imperative Commission, wrote that fear is the number one cause that hinders Christians from witnessing.

Norman Cates shared the humorous story of a guy who prayed this prayer every morning: "Lord, if you want me to witness to someone today, please give me a sign to show me who it is." One day he found himself on a bus when a big, burly man sat next to him. The bus was nearly empty but this guy sat next to our praying friend. The timid Christian anxiously waited for his stop so he could exit the bus. But before he could get very nervous about the man next to him, the big guy burst into tears and began to weep. He then cried out with a loud voice, "I need to be saved. I’m a lost sinner and I need the Lord. Won’t somebody tell me how to be saved?" He turned to the Christian and pleaded, "Can you show me how to be saved?" The believer immediately bowed his head and prayed, "Lord, is this a sign?" Are you looking for a "sign" to start witnessing?

Very often it is simply the fear of rejection that is stopping us from witnessing. It is one thing to suffer rejection, ridicule or even persecution at human hands, but it is far worse to be hypocritical and then have to face the judgment of God, who can throw people into hell.  In fact Jesus assures us that we do not have to worry about how we will defend ourselves or what we will say, because the Holy Spirit will teach us at that time what we should say (Lu. 12:11-12). Depending on whether we confess or deny Jesus, the Son of Man will be a witness for or against us at the judgment seat of God (vv. 8–9).

Therefore we should not fear man because…

II.   Only God is to be feared

“But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after your body has been killed, has authority to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him (v. 5)

Jesus taught that we should fear God because he has the power to punish sin and consign people to utter destruction. Fear is mentioned for the first time in Scriptures in Gen. 3:10. Adam said to God after the Fall, after He had disobeyed God, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid...” Fear is quite naturally the logical consequence of sin. Before Adam and Eve sinned there was no death; they were in perfect harmony with God, each other and all of nature – there was nothing to fear.

But now we live in a fearful world. We wake up fearing the way the economy is going, the lawlessness in our land, the education system going down the drain, our future, etc. We all have to deal with fear at some level. It is part of the human condition. An absence of fear in a sin-contaminated world is impossible and foolish. The self-preservation instinct teaches us to fear certain things. And there are certain things that we need to fear in our lives such as electricity, water, etc. That kind of fear is a respect.

Have you ever had a question in your mind why our world does what it wants to do? Why does our secular society condone sinful practices? Because the world does not have a proper respect for God because of wickedness and therefore; because of the greatness of sin, there is little fear.

A school teacher was retiring early. When they asked her why, this is how she responded. "The problem is really fear. The teachers are now afraid of the principals. The principals are afraid of the superintendents. The superintendents are afraid of the school boards. The boards are afraid of the parents and the parents are afraid of the children. But the children? They are not afraid of anybody."

That phrase, "The fear of the LORD" is used 25 times in the Bible. 14 times just in the book of Proverbs, Prov. 1:7 "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction." Prov. 9:10 "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom…" The fear of the Lord is an important theological concept in the Bible because it is the foundation from which we interact and we have a relationship with God.

The fear of the Lord is vital for the survival of a nation. It is vital for the stability of a marriage. It is even vital for the salvation of an individual. The fear of God is the glue that holds a society together. It is the safety net that keeps a nation from falling into chaos, anarchy, and moral destruction. We have lost, for the most part, the fear of God in this nation and we are losing it more everyday.

Ps. 36:1 An oracle is within my heart concerning the sinfulness of the wicked. There is no fear of God.

Today God is reminding us (his disciples) that we ought to fear or have a healthy respect for “the one who has authority to throw you into hell.” The Jews would understand that as an obvious reference to God, the judge, whose power the wise are respectfully to “fear.”

Psalm 90:11-12 If only we knew the power of your anger! Your wrath is as great as the fear that is your due. 12 Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

True fear of the Lord is born out of a knowledge of how infinitely powerful, majestic and full of goodness God is. Before one can grow in the Lord, he must first learn to fear Him. Many people, including believers, have ceased to see Him for who He is – The Holy One and Righteous Judge. We have forgotten that we have to “worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our ‘God is a consuming fire’” (Heb. 12:29).

The fear of the Lord is a natural reaction when we recognize that:
- He is the Creator and we are the creatures
- He is the Master and we are the servants
- He is the Father and we are the children

We are to have a deep reverence and respect for the Lord. Literally, we are to be awed and humbled by His presence. The result will be a respect for God, His word and a desire to obey Him.

The fear of the Lord protects us from carelessness or being sacrilegious. Fearing the Lord is the key to successful living. This healthy reverence enables us to know God, praise Him, enjoy His many benefits and blessings and to rest in His peace and security. Martin Luther said, "Being afraid of God is different from fearing God. The fear of God is a fruit of love, but being afraid of Him is the seed of hatred. Therefore we should not be afraid of God but should fear Him, so that we do not hate Him Whom we should love."

Thus there are two sides of the fear of the Lord. The one God wants for us produces reverence and obedience. The other fear of the Lord is a result of not knowing Him and causes us to cower in dread and terror in anticipation of His wrath and judgment.

According to Oswald Chambers, "The remarkable thing about fearing God is that, when you fear God, you fear nothing else; whereas, if you do not fear God, you fear everything else" because…

III.  The fear of the Lord will overcome all fears WHEN we know THAT God values and cares for us

“Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. 7 Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows” (v. 6-7)

Fear has a constructive role to play in enabling men to realize both the degenerate state of their souls and their need of divine forgiveness. In the Bible, no-Jewish believers are often referred to as God-fearers, not God-lovers. Why? Because there is a legitimate reason to be fearful. “It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Heb. 10:31).

Unless there is personal awareness of the awesome and majestic sovereignty of God, it is impossible to have a meaningful faith existing in one’s heart (Ps. 5:7; 89:7). Though Christians are to be liberated from the fear of men (Heb 13:6), death (2:15), and life in general (2 Tm 1:6–7), they must never lose their sense of the awesomeness of God.

This concept of fearing God was very real to John Newton. When he wrote his song "Amazing Grace" he included this verse:
"T’was grace that taught my heart to fear, and grace my fears relieved
How precious did that grace appear, the hour I first believed."

All fears disappear when we walk in faith and in the fear of the Lord.

Psalm 27:1 The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?

Psalm 31:19 How abundant are the good things that you have stored up for those who fear you, that you bestow in the sight of all, on those who take refuge in you. 20 In the shelter of your presence you hide them from all human intrigues; you keep them safe in your dwelling
from accusing tongues.

Psalm 34:6-9 The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them. 8 Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him. 9 Fear the Lord, you his holy people, for those who fear him lack nothing.

Psalm 147:11 the Lord delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.
Fearing God demands a response. God created us. When we fell into sin He sought us. When we had no hope He came and bought us. When our sins were unpayable He offered Himself as payment. When we were guilty He was a substitutionary sacrifice for our sin. All that truth leads us to respond. First in saving faith and then in surrendered life.
Do you want freedom from fear? Accept the Father’s love and salvation. Claim His promises and cling to Him, knowing that you are safe in the arms of the Father.

During World War II when the Holocaust took the lives of millions of people, Solomon Rosenberg, his wife, their two sons, and his mother and father were arrested and placed in a Nazi concentration camp. It was a labour camp, and the rules were simple. "As long as you can do your work, you are permitted to live. When you become too weak to do your work, then you are exterminated." Solomon Rosenberg watched his mother and father marched off to their deaths. He knew that next would be his youngest son, David, because David had always been a frail child. Every evening Solomon Rosenberg came back into the barracks after his hours of labour and searched for the faces of his family. When he found them they would huddle together, embrace one another, and thank God for another day of life. One day he came back and didn’t see those familiar faces. He finally discovered his oldest son, Joshua, in a corner, huddled, weeping, and praying. He said, "Josh, tell me it’s not true." Joshua turned and said, "It is true, Poppa. Today David was not strong enough to do his work. So they came for him." "But where is your mother?" asked Mr. Rosenberg. "Oh Poppa," he said, "When they came for David, he was afraid and he cried. Momma said, `There is nothing to be afraid of, David,’ and she took his hand and went with him."

Even with our last and worst enemy, even in death, there is no reason for fear. You can place your hand in the hand of the Father and let Him walk you through the valley of the Shadow.

MAKING A DECISION ON THE FEAR OF THE LORD

Walking in the fear of the Lord is going to have to be your individual decision. No one can do it for you. The decision to live a life that is ordered around a holy, reverential respect for God is a decision that you must make for yourself. If you have not accepted the free gift of salvation you can do it today.

Dear believer. If you fear Him, then you will want to honour him in everything. He will come first and His will will be paramount in your life. The Lord's way becomes the only way. His approval the only approval you seek dispelling any fear that will lead us to compromise our faith or cause us to deny our Lord.

Keith and Mary Russell testified about God's goodness in their lives and how TOP is so much like their home church.

Doctrines of the Bible Module 6 - Man and Sin: The creation of Man Lesson 1

Module 6 Man and Sin

Gen 1:26-27
Then God said, let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground."

So God created man in his own image. In the image of God he created him; Male and female he created them. As a disciple of Christ, we need to focus upon growth in spiritual maturity. One basic area of christian growth is this particular area of growing in our knowledge of man as created by God, his nature and constitution; his Fall, the entrance and transmission of sin into the human race.

This knowledge refers to both our intellectual understanding and our personal experience of the full implications of being man in both his fallen and his redeemed state. Christian maturity can only be attained through this two-fold growth. Faith needs to transform both the head and the heart.

Module 6
Lesson 1 The creation of man
Lesson 2 The nature of man
Lesson 3 The constitution of man
Lesson 4 The origin of the soul
Lesson 5 The Fall
Lesson 6 The nature of sin
Lesson 7 The transmission of sin
Lesson 8 The consequences of sin

Lesson 1 The Creation of Man

A. The origin and unity of mankind by creation

1.  The human race began in a single first man, male, who was brought into existence by creative acts of God. (Gen 2:7 the Lord formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living being.)

2. There is an organic unity of the human race in an original, single, human, male specimen out of whom all others, including the first female, were formed. (Gen 2:22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of man, and he brought her to the man.)

The keyword is organic unity.

3. The human race is an organic unity by natural generation from a single pair who in turn began in the single male from whom the female was taken. (Gen 5:3 When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image, and he named him Seth.)

B. The original capacities of mankind in the un-fallen state

1. Mankind was created with the capacity for dominion over the whole earth. (Gen 1:26 ....and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over all the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground')

God's original intention was for them to rule or have dominion over all the earth.

2. Mankind has inherent powers to achieve the divinely given mission to populate, subdue and rule the earth.

3. Mankind was created in a state of maturity." (Gen 2:15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.)

Adam was created as a full grown man.  In God there is no chicken egg situation. God made the chicken first.

4. Mankind was created in a state of perfect adaptation to the environment in which they were placed.

5. Primal mankind was endowed with full capacity for reflective thought and thereby the creative powers necessary for the divinely given mission on earth.

6. Mankind initially had a language and was able to use it. (Gen 2:16-17 And the Lord God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die")

7. Capacity for reflective (rational) thought combined with rational use of verbal symbols enabled man to name the animals of Eden. (Gen 2:20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field.)

8. Mankind was created as moral beings. (Gen 3:8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden.)

9. Mankind has an innate sense of goodness, beauty and truth. (Gen 3:6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it....)

10. Mankind is totally different from the rest of creation. (Gen 1:26 Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness.....)

Questions

1. "Science has proven that man evolved from apes. Therefore, the belief that man was created by God is factually wrong. " We know that this statement is false. How would you then respond to the statement, giving your reasons?

Evolution is a theory not a fact.

Unresolved Problems Concerning The Theory Of Macro-evolution

  1. Evolutionary theory assumes that mutations are helpful and constructive while the general observation of life is that mutations are often harmful and destructive.
  2. Mutation of genes cannot account for the origin of new genes that are needed for new species of life to form.
  3. For a new organ to form, a great number of multiple mutations need to occur at the same time. This cannot occur on a random platform. Random mutations are often single mutations that are limited to small variations in the characteristics of the life form. Evolutionary theory cannot explain how full organs develop all at once in a new life form,
  4. There is an absence of transitional life forms in the fossil record. This observation is a clear refutation of evolutionary theory.
  5. In a particular fossil record (Cambrian explosion), There is a sudden appearance of many new animal forms without transitional fossils or common ancestors. This record points strongly to a creation perspective rather than an evolutionary explanation.
  6. Simple life forms are found above more complex life forms in the fossil record. This observation is totally at odds with the conclusions of the evolutionary theory.
  7. The theory of evolution assumes that similar structures in different life forms point to common ancestry. However genetic studies have shown that similar structures can be produced by different genes which debunks the link of common ancestry.
  8. One assumption of the theory is that the presence of pseudo-genes (junk DNA) in different life forms point to common ancestry. These genes are thought to be fossils which no longer have any useful function. However further research has led to the discovery of functions that are linked to these so-called junk DNA. The linking of "junk DNA" to common ancestry is no longer valid.
  9. The whole theory of evolution based on random mutations to produce more complex life forms is against the Second Law of Thermodynamics which states that all systems left alone tends towards disorder rather than more order.
  10. There is finally the problem of how inanimate chemicals can acquire life on its own. No reasonable explanation has thus far been offered for this problem of the origin of life.
Therefore, based on observations of processes in present life forms, the fossil record, genetic research and the laws of science, the theory of evolution and its assumptions is more speculation than fact.

Creation is more factual than evolution.

2. Try to make a list of the differences between a man and an animal.

1. Religious - longs for God (faith)
2. Moral - demands of duty (conscience)
3. Intellectual - joy in understanding (desire for knowledge)
4. Aesthetics - delight in beauty
5. Immortality - live for eternity
6. Self-conscious - awareness of 'I'

------------------------

Word and Spirit
Word without the Spirit, you will dry up.
Spirit without the Word, you will blow up.
Spirit and the Word, you will grow up.

A bible study is not just understanding, but it is about understanding with the conviction of te Holy Spirit to transform you in some way.

A man with conviction is very difficult to shake. But conviction is about the heart, not the head. To make you convinced in your head and convicted in your heart.

What does convicted means. Take heaven for example. I am someone am who is interested in heaven. When you are convicted in your heart it is by the conviction and revelation of te Holy Spirit. I know heaven is real not because I have been to heaven but I am convicted by the Holy Spirit in his word that heaven is real. To be convinced in your head that there is a heaven you must know that we are beings that have reason. Rational faculty. We need coherence. Something that we believe that makes sense.

We will not be able to understand everything not because it is unreasonable but because it is beyond reason but not against reason. It is mystery that belongs to God. This conviction will make you stand firm in God.

In the creation of man the greatest challenge is the theory of evolution. And the younger generation may ask you this.

There are three ways to answer this. Insist that the bible is correct. Or you try to explain and the young person may end up thinking the theory of evolution is more reasonable. Or the third way, you will have to do some work. That's why we are here.

The fall of man there is a probationary test like in Adam and Eve failing the test and the consequences is until now.

This is a proxy battle where Adam and Eve wrestled with Satan. It was a spiritual battle where man lost the kingship over this world.

Do we commit sinful acts because we are sinful or do we become sinful because we commit sinful acts? We need to think a little.  It is very difficult to answer because it is related to this question, do infants that die go to hell?

These are some of the questions you have to handle and these are some of the things we will work through.

Are we condemned because we commit sinful act or are we condemned because we have a sinful nature?

Is it fair for God to judge me for Adam's sin when I don't even know him?

These are hard questions. I may not have the complete answers but we will work at what the church have been believing and how we can make sense of it.

There is only one consequence of sin that is stated in the bible.

Death.

Genesis 2:16-17
And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.”

We believe that death is abnormal. Buddhist believe that death and life is normal. But for Christians death is not normal. Man was created for eternity.

When we talk of sin there is 3 stages.

Adam in his unfallen state - able not to sin.
After Adam, man in the fallen state - not able not to sin
Future state for believers - able not to sin

I want to work on:

Genesis 2:7
the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.

Genesis 2:8
Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed.

Genesis 2:15
The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.

A book was written that Eden was at Southern Iraq.

Man was formed outside if Eden. You may asking there is a difference?

When I was in school, in our biology book man is put as an animal, of a higher order. The book also assume that the theory of evolution is a fact. And in the book the early men were very kesian, living in caves.

The bible records that the first man and woman had a good life. Not like these cave men that were described in the biology books.

To work and take care of it could mean to guard and upkeep the garden. We believed that Adam had the intellect to make tools. Adam was not a tabula rasa (blank page) when he was created. God already endorsed him with knowledge.

A one day old infant has a lot of things in his mind. He is not a blank page. That's why a four year old can be a music maestro and 6 year old a chess master just like Adam who was not a blank page.

Mankind had a language unlike what was depicted of cave men. Adam can converse with God. Even Eve can converse with the devil. Adam was the quiet one.

When you read the bible you must first know:
1. Type eg narrative, poetic, revelatory etc
2. Literal - grammatical
3. Symbolical/allegorical

The whole of Genesis is a narrative so everything in there happened literally. There was no break in the first five books of the bible. In the case of Eve first taking the fruit, Adam was in authority and is as guilty.

Adam had the intellect to name animals. The first record of the word guilt in Gen 3:8 which is related to morality.

Women are more attracted to beauty and intuitive sense of the subjective and is more observant. Like in Gen 3:6.

Gen 1:1-25, if you look at the whole creation story, you will see that creation was fashioned by God for man.

I like these two words:
The personal - self
The corporate - community - family

The work of God is always both. Some young believers only see the self and not the community and they cannot grow.

Man is not just the pinnacle of God's creation. But all of creation was made for man and that is how much God love us. The greatest gift of God is of course Jesus. The breath of God in Adam was God's gift to Adam.

We are ruling over the earth today not the way God intended. We are abusing it instead.

Man was fashioned by God for him.

Once you hold this key, the whole bible becomes coherent to you. We find our life and purpose in him.

This short Statement by the Westminster Shorter Catechism is the best.

What is the chief end of man?
Man's chief end is to glorify God and enjoy him forever.

Many churches today in the preaching you'll find a certain trend.

Genesis 3:21 The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.

The verses preceding this was all judgement and curses. Yet at the end of it you see a father's heart, God clothed them. This is grace and love. God wants communion and fellowship and this far surpasses the pleasures of the world. The whole focus of everything is God. As precious as we are he is the focus not us.

Have you heard of Christians who say this. I want to be a convert not a disciple. It is because it's easy to be a convert and go to heaven but not a disciple which is hard. But he missed the point. Jesus is our Lord and saviour. It is more than just going to heaven.

Many Christians just want what God can give them and not God himself. They have missed the point.

Apart from all our circumstances which he is interested in, the most precious gift is enjoying his presence here and not just the afterlife.

Difference between man and animal

  1. The brute is conscious, but man is self-conscious... The brute does not objectify self... does not distinguish itself its sensations... has percepts [but not] apperception, i.e. perception accompanied by reference of it to the self.
  2. The brute has only percepts; man has also concepts... [no] power of abstraction... of deriving abstract ideas from particular things or... experiences.
  3. The brute has no language... why... not? Because they have nothing to say, i.e. have no general ideas which words might express.
  4. The brute forms no judgments, e.g. that this is like that... Hence no sense of the ridiculous [humor], and no laughter.
  5. The brute has no reasoning... that this follows from that... a feeling that the sequence is necessary. Association of ideas [events] without judgment is the typical process of the brute mind.
  6. The brute has no general ideas or intuitions as of space, time substance, cause. The physical in man, on the contrary is only an aid to the spiritual.
  7. The brute has determination but not self-determination [that is, it is wholly determined by heredity and environment] Even [Thomas] Huxley   has said that taking mind into account, there is between man and the highest beasts an 'enormous gulf,' a 'divergence immeasurable' and 'practically infinite.'
  8. The brute has no conscience and no religious nature.
Animal life parallels human life at many points, but it is in another plane. Something guides the lower animals But it is not thought; something restrains them, but it is not judgment; they are provident without prudence; they are active without industry, they are skillful without practice... wise without knowledge... deceptive without guilt. When they are joyful, they sing or they play [or appear to]; when they are distressed, they moan or they cry... and yet I do not suppose they experience the emotion of joy or sorrow, or anger or love as we do, because these feelings in them do not involve reflection, memory, and what we call the higher nature.

TOP's Baby from God

Pastor Pauline Ding

Today I'm coming here to challenge you. This is a mission challenge meeting. I was supposed to come and share a short session but on Friday pastor told me I'll be sharing the sermon for Sunday. I had a long funeral yesterday. The longest I have attended but praise God I have a message for you today.

Today's message is TOP's Baby from God. I was wondering what message to share so God gave me this topic.

As we see this building, the building is not the baby. It is the place that will house the baby. When Jesus was born he needed a place. So we looked for a place to have the baby.

Yesterday Bro Wilbur and Bro Joseph were there and the aircon and lights were up. Today I want you to take ownership of this baby. It is our baby, not just mine. We partner with God to do this ministry for him.

But now let's read from the bible.

Luke 21:26-38
Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. 27 At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”
29 He told them this parable:“Look at the fig tree and all the trees. 30 When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near. 31 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near.
32 “I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
34 “Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with dissipation, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you unexpectedly like a trap. 35 For it will come upon all those who live on the face of the whole earth. 36 Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.”
37 Each day Jesus was teaching at the temple, and each evening he went out to spend the night on the hill called the Mount of Olives, 38 and all the people came early in the morning to hear him at the temple.

Matthew 1:18-25
The Birth of Jesus Christ
18 This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about:His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. 19 Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.
20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:23 “The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” –which means, “God with us.”
24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. 25 But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

Last week we had Mother's Day and we talked about the tenacity of a mother. This week we are talking about bringing forth a baby.

Mary bore a child who is the redeemer. God has come to choose you all like Mary and Joseph. I will come to it in a while but I want to talk a little about the history how it all started.

In Dec 2004, tsunami hit Penang from Gurney Drive to the airport side. When it happened I asked what is the church doing about it? One pastor commented that the need is too overwhelming so cannot do anything. Then God asked me what are you doing about it? I was looking at others but God was looking at me.

I was a poor person with no resources but God said to give my five loaves and two fishes. God is asking for what we have in our hands. At that time we had a lot of towels from Rasa Sayang which was doing renovation work so we took all the towels and gave them out.

I was poor at that time so I looked at the need near the airport which was nearer for me. I teamed up with Wellesley Methodist Church to help and I told my friends and got the support so we bought pillows etc to give them. After the tsunami, they had empty houses so slowly we put back the necessities in the hard core poor houses.

Slowly I know everybody and support came because they know I know where the needs are. I collected thousands of dollars for them and continued to bless these people. There was a Simon who told me what I needed I just have to ask.

During Chinese New Year I had a pastor came to sponsor an event for Chinese New Year. The second one was Easter where I had an evangelistic meeting. The first was a total disaster because the pastor was late and it rained. But the second one was the birth of this church. Pastor Kenneth came and I felt that this baby could be cared for by him. It's not about money, other churches can give but we needed worker and God used him to built the church for three years.

Teluk Kumbar was so remote even to find a toilet was difficult. It was hard for me at that time. So ulu (backward). Until today there is no petrol kiosk. To buy petrol I have to go to Bayan Lepas or Balik Pulau. Very ulu. But God put this in my heart.

50 years ago missionaries came to start a church but nobody could start a church. Pastor Kenneth could not find a building for 3 years until somebody found a place in Gertak Sanggul where a pig farm was. It's the end of the road to a fishing village. Everybody knows everybody else. Small place.

After another 3 years something happened and the church was closed down. Pastor Kenneth tried to find a worker but nobody wanted because it was so remote.

I got so vengeful when I heard. How can close down what God has started so I took it up by faith. As I took it up God used different people to help me revive this church. Four core members and bro Simon was one of them.

As I took up this church it was difficult to get the other members of about 30
to come back. People who are offended by this church, it's difficult for them to come back. I didn't look at the difficulty because I know God loves them and want the church to carry on.

No one knows about the beginning except me and God encourages me when a 66 year old man accepted the Lord. He came 4 times and then he accepted the Lord.

Our worship is very vibrant, the board members who visited will know, and this man walked in and got complete healing even though nobody touched him. The miracle happened like the lame man with Peter and John. He could hardly walk but now he can march in and even jump with both feet. He was so happy. We showed the passion of Christ on Good Friday and he accepted Christ. He is with us for 3 years and got baptised. He is faithful and sell groceries. In the 2 years there
God encouraged me with one soul. One sheep but he said he is the big sheep because he is quite big size.

I went through tough time in the 2 years because my mother was sick and I also went through difficult time and in tears and broken heart I still have to drive there for this one sheep. Remember God said he will leave the 99 for that one sheep.

Because to went through so much difficulty I cannot do full time so I did another job. There was a church who wanted to support me from KL but because I could not fulfill the requirements since I am not full time I lost the support. So I had no mother church.

I used to fetch one car load from Tanjung Bungah to Gertak Sanggul. It was by the grace of God that I could do it. It's so far. So I decided to stay at Gertak Sanggul. I thought it was so hard to find a mother church to support I decided to find others to attend my church. If I have 15 I can have a sovereign church. I found out it was so much work to get so many members as I have to fetch them. I was cook, musician, driver, preacher and I was burnt out finally and was ready to close down. Enough I said to myself.

God used every situation to turn out for good. Being burnt out I was looking at how I can get help and looked at what is God's way. God said no to me for wanting to close down so in October I told the members cuti dua minggu but I was afraid to tell them I wanted to close down.

A sister from your Hokkien service gave me an envelope of 300.00 ringgit for me to win souls. I was thinking I was going to close down but here I was given money to win souls. I was still burnt out but the faithful members was still attending. Even by night they were still there until mosquitoes came.

Then pastor Cindy preached that God is going to bring many souls to this church. I confessed to her later that I wanted to close down the church. Pastor Cindy got the members to pray for me.

So now no mother church, license also no more so I looked for a base church. At least I can get back my license. So I spoke to pastor Gideon about my vision for Teluk Kumbar, not Gertak Sanggul. That was my original plan. We prayed just for a base church. No giving up and cannot close. I was surprised the first time I spoke to pastor Gideon he challenged me to go full time and be a pastor for TOP. I was working at Penang Care and they wanted me to take over but with this I needed to pray for a replacement. In January a pastor called up and said my wife got nothing to do so got work for her or not. Praise God, he supplied the replacement.

So God has moved and God answered all my prayers so fast. Don't you think this is God's plan? God cleared all my problems. No more excuses. This is TOP's baby. My vision is to the nations. It must reach out to all the nations. This is my mandate to do it. God showed that I'm going to pastor a big church and I laughed like Sarah. I only pastored one soul for two years.

God is changing me and I am growing so fast. From the first time I shared with you all and now it's different. This church is not Hokkien only but it is going to be international. I already invited two Myanmarese. It is going to be international. At the pig farm there is a lot of Myanmarese. I found 2 Myanmarese bibles and as I looked at the bible and the only word I know is that this is a Myanmar bible. I learn how to flip the bible. I just flip to the page and ask them to read. God shows me how to use the Myanmar bible. I can share the gospel even though I don't know a single word.

God is telling me he is reaching out to these people. It is all about the heart. God loves us so much.

When I first came it was your 35th anniversary. I was asking myself what is this church doing? 35 years and still no baby. Like those so occupied with career and no time for children. So I challenge you it is time to have a baby. Not rebuke you but to challenge you it is time to have a baby.

The baby are the people and the souls out there. If you don't want a baby it is a burden. But if you want the baby, we can do something wonderful for God. If we can take ownership. It is called TOPTK. My new card is I am assistant pastor. I am one of the worker together with you. The message is not arise shine. God asked me to tell you that this is our baby. It is not my church. I am a worker with you and not the chief pastor. Can we work together. I am not calling you to come and help me or join. But can you see it is a baby that belong to us.

I belong to a category like in Isaiah who shall send me? Who will say here am I, send me. If you don't feel a special call but you are stirred by the word of God, take ownership of this baby that God has chosen. Let's take care of this baby and not abort the baby. We should avail ourselves to God and ask how can we get involve.

Doctrines of the Bible Module 2B - God’s Special Agents: Angels Lesson 4

Lesson 4 God’s Special Agents: Angels

“They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.”   (Rev 12:11)

A. What are angels?

Angels are created spiritual beings with moral judgment and high intelligence, but without physical bodies.

1. Created spiritual beings
(Neh 9:6) The host of heaven refers to angels. They were created by God.
(2 Pet 2:4) Angels have moral judgment because some of them sinned and fell from their positions.
(Mat 28:5) They are intelligent as can be seen from their speech.
(Heb 1:14) Angels are spiritual creatures and do not ordinarily have physical bodies.

2. Rank and order among angels
(Jude 9) One angel, Michael, is called an archangel, a title that indicates rule and authority over other angels.
(Rev 12:7-8) The archangel Michael is mentioned and appears to be a leader in the angelic army.

3. The power of angels
Angels apparently have very great power.
(Ps 103:20) Angels are known as mighty ones.
(Col 1:16) Angels are known as “powers” and “authorities”.

B. The place of angels in God’s purpose

1. Angels show the greatness of God’s love and plan for us.
God created two groups of intelligent, moral creatures. Among the angels, many sinned but God decided to redeem none of them. This was perfectly just for God to do, and no angel can ever complain that he has been unfairly treated by God.

Now, among the other group of moral creatures, human beings, we also find that all have sinned and turned away from God. As with the angels that sinned, God could have let all of us go on our chosen path toward eternal condemnation. Had God decide to save no one out of the entire human race, he would be perfectly just to do so, and no one could complain of unfairness on his part. But God decided to do more than merely meet the demands of justice. He decided to redeem out of sinful mankind a great multitude whom no one can number, “from every tribe and tongue and people and nation (Rev 5:9). This demonstrates his incomprehensible mercy and love and grace. The striking contrast with the fate of angels brings this truth home to us

2. Angels remind us that the unseen world is real
(2 Kings 6:17) When the Lord opened the eyes of Elisha’s servant, he saw a great angelic army.

3. Angels carry out some of God’s plans
(Like 1:11-19) An angel brings God’s message to Zechariah.
(2 Sam 24:16-17) An angel carries out God’s judgment , bringing a plague upon Israel.
(Dan 10:13) The archangel Michael wars against demonic forces.

4. Angels directly glorify God.
(Ps 103:20) Angels glorify God for who he is, for his excellence.

C. The origin of demons

Demons are evil angels who sinned against God and who now continually work evil in the world.
(2 Pet 2:4) Demons are these angels who sinned and rebelled against God.
(Is 14:12-15) Possibly referring to the fall of Satan, the prince of demons. The sin of Satan is described as one of pride and attempting to be equal to God in status and authority.

D. Satan as head of the demons

(Job 1:6) Satan (meaning adversary) is the personal name of the head of the demons.
Other names for Satan are : devil(Mat 4:1) “the serpent”(Gen 3:1) Beelzebub(Mat 10:25) “the prince of this world”(John 12:31) “the ruler of the kingdom of the air”(Eph 2:2) “the evil one”(Matt 13:19)

E. The activity of Satan and demons

1. Satan was the originator of sin
Satan sinned before any human beings did. The devil’s characteristic has been to originate sin and tempt others to sin.

2. Demons oppose and try to destroy every work of God
Just as Satan tempted Eve to sin against God(Gen 3:1-6), so he tried to get Jesus to sin as thus fail in his mission as the Messiah(Matt 4:1-11). The tactics of Satan and his demons are to use lies(John 8:44), deception(Rev 12:9), murder(John 8:44)) and every other kind of destructive activity to cause people to turn away from God and to destroy themselves. They will try to blind people to the gospel(2 Cor 4:4) and keep them in bondage to things that hinder them from coming to God(Gal 4:8).

3. Yet demons are limited by God’s control and have limited power
The story of Job makes it clear that Satan could only do what God gave him permission to do and nothing more.(Job 1:12; 2:6). Demons are kept in “eternal chains”(Jude 6) and can be successfully resisted by Christians through the authority that Christ gives them(James 4:7). Moreover the power of demons is limited and weakened because of their sin. Their power is probably less than the power of angels.

F. Jesus gives believers authority to rebuke demons and command them to leave

The work of Christ on the cross is the ultimate basis for our authority over demons (Heb 2:14; Col 2:15; Rev 12:11).
Our position as children of God is the firm spiritual position from which we engage in spiritual warfare(Gal 3:26).
1 John 4:4 affirms that “…..he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.”

G. The destiny of Satan and the demons

(Rev 20:10) Satan will finally be thrown into the lake of burning sulphur to be tormented forever.
(Mat 25:41) Satan and his angels will burn in eternal fire which God has prepared for them.

Review questions
  1. How many angels are there?
  2. Are we higher or lower than angels in terms of our standing before God?
  3. It does seem that when people go to see fortune- tellers there are instances when the fortune-teller can tell people accurate details of their lives. How is this possible?
  4. Can a Christian be demon possessed?
  5. What conclusion can we draw from the following verses? Luke 9:1; Luke 10:17-20

God's Work by God's Power
