Success for 2018

Rev Lawrence Seow

Joshua 1:1-9
After the death of Moses the servant of the LORD, it came to pass that the LORD spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ assistant, saying: “Moses My servant is dead. Now therefore, arise, cross this Jordan, you and all this people, to the land which I am giving to them. Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given you, as I said to Moses. From the wilderness and this Lebanon as far as the great river, the River Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and to the Great Sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your territory. No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life; as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you nor forsake you. Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant gave you. This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

MOSES IS DEAD
Leave the past behind

Israel knew Moses was dead (Deut 34:8)

The Israelites grieved, mourned for Moses 30 days

Many people are still trapped in their past, they cannot lay hold of the future

They have no future because they cannot let go of what happened in the past

Past hurts…relationships…failures…disappointments (we all have them)

Past success…glories and achievements…laurels and reputation…seniority…education and experience

Life can get very complicated and sometimes we become confused and conflicted

Here are a few real-life scenarios:

A woman is in a loveless marriage...it’s a toxic relationship...but she has 2 young children...wants to walk out on the marriage but has to consider the kids

A man suffers a stroke...he was very active before...now immobile...considers ending his life (conflicted)

A husband whose wife is more successful...she is busy...has no time for him...he feels neglected...meets another woman...a young divorcee...begins a relationship

A man with elderly parents...he has failed in life...wants to migrate and start a new life elsewhere...but his duty to his parents holds him back

We are conflicted souls...a bundle of contradictions...a paradox of inconsistencies, even among the very best of us

Conflicting thoughts...emotions...beliefs and passions (full of contradictions)

Psalm 90:10    our years are 70 or 80...the best of them are but trouble and sorrow

Moses is dead!

Break that fixation…paralysis that results from always looking back

This applies also at the church-level…forget the past – people who have come and gone, great times, bad times…highs and lows…what you’ve accomplished OR failed to do

CROSS THIS JORDAN
Cross Over – A New Start

The River Jordan is below sea level – deep and turbulent during rainy season, but slow and sluggish during the summer

Where Jesus was baptised…

Israel had to cross this river to enter the Promised Land…it was in their way

There will always be obstacles and hurdles in the way of The Promised Land

Giants were waiting for them across the Jordan

There will be daunting challenges ahead, intimidating situations and uphill tasks

The devil will even send roadblocks and distractions your way

God never promised it would be easy or smooth sailing…if you don’t cross this Jordon you’ll never enter the land of Promise

Diamonds are formed after undergoing tremendous heat and pressure...deep under the earth’s crust...carbon material

BE STRONG & COURAGEOUS

Go the distance – boxing parlance for finishing the fight

Do not quit or stop half-way – no matter how tough or bad it gets

Heard it before, and you need to hear it again – the Christian race is not a 100 meter dash; it is a marathon

It’s not how well you start but how you finish that matters

A pastor was preaching one Sunday when he spotted an old friend in the service. He asked a deacon to invite this man (obviously very wealthy and successful) to lunch after the service. During lunch, the man broke down and sobbed. He told the pastor how they had both grown up as teenagers in church, and while the pastor answered God’s call, he had pursued his career and achieved success. But after so many years, he knew deep inside he was not where God wanted him to be. And all his secular success and accomplishments could not make up for it.

Sad truth is many Christians start out well but they relax along the way…get complacent and stop pressing on

Story of the man who found an eagle’s egg

This is why we need God’s Word – meditate on it day and night, keep us focussed and strong (read text again)

Your mind is the control tower

When we think God’s thoughts we think the most powerful thoughts

Called to Unity

Pastor Melinda Song

I never imagined a day when I would be glad to see all the seats in the sanctuary empty during a Sunday celebration worship service. That was what happened on 15 October 2017 and I was ecstatic with joy. Everyone was in a care group; no one was left out, not even the visitors.

Ephesians 4:1-6, NIV
As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. 2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. 3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

In Paul’s letters the first half are usually doctrinal and the second half are practicalThus Paul spent the first 3 chapters of the book of Ephesians telling them about the things that the Lord has done for themIn the second half of the book, from Chapter 4 onwards, Paul tells them how they should respond to what the Lord has done for them

They are to live a life worthy of their calling as Christians which is seen when there is unity in the body of Christ.

Unity is powerful
• 3 musketeers
• United we stand, divided we fall.
• In a Peanuts cartoon Lucy demanded that Linus change TV channels, threatening him with her fist if he didn't. "What makes you think you can walk right in here and take over?" asks Linus. "These five fingers," says Lucy. "Individually they're nothing but when I curl them together like this into a single unit, they form a weapon that is terrible to behold." "Which channel do you want?" asks Linus. Turning away, he looks at his fingers and says, "Why can't you guys get organized like that?"
• Tower of Babel
• Psalm 133

Unity is beautiful
• Synchronised diving
• Dancers in a ballet corp
• Football players on the field
• Migrating animals

The key verse is found in verse 3 – Make every effort to keep the unity of the SpiritThe church must WORK at attaining and maintaining unity.

• Unity is every leader’s challenge
• Unity is every believer’s choice

THE PROBLEM

People are the problem. We are the problem.

We are all porcupines.

The German philosopher Schopenhauer compared the human race to a bunch of porcupines huddling together on a cold winter’s night. He said, ‘The colder it gets outside, the more we huddle together for warmth; but the closer we get to one another, the more we hurt one another with our sharp quills. And in the lonely night of earth’s winter eventually we begin to drift apart and wander out on our own and freeze to death in our loneliness.’” (Wayne Brouwer, Holland, Michigan. Leadership, Vol. 17, no. 2)

James writes, “What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you?” (James 4:1).

We are all different with individual opinions and preferences.Compounded by our selfish natures, misunderstandings and offences lead to hurt, which later results in bitterness. But discord, dissension, and factions are works of the flesh (Gal. 5:19-21)

THE SOLUTION

1. Cultivate the attitudes essential for unity

Attitude is about your state of mind; your mental and emotional position - and the expression of that in your daily dealings with events, with people and with God.

Ephesians 4:2, NIV
2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.

John Stott refers to these as the “five foundation stones of Christian unity.” Many of these qualities are inter-related and sometimes it is difficult to differentiate between them

Humble
In Paul’s day, ‘humility’ was considered a weakness or character flaw by the Greeks and the Romans. They did not have a word for ‘humility’ in their language.

So Paul created a new Greek word ‘tapeinophrosune’ whichliterally means “lowliness of mind”, which is considered one of the supreme virtues in Christianity.

In Philippians 2, Paul showcases the Jesus as the supremeexample of humility (Phil. 2:5-11) and he calls us to have this same attitude of humility and lowliness that Christ had.

We are not to think more highly of ourselves than we ought to think. Instead, we are to think of others and their needs over ours. We choose not to assert ourselves or lord over other people.

It’s an attitude and a life choice.

Warning! Humble yourself before God humbles you!

Gentle
Gentleness or meekness is usually associated with weakness but it actually implies great strength being withheld. Think of a burly biker holding his newborndaughter. He is a powerful giant who can easily crush the frail little baby. So he holds her gently.

We also tend to think that being gentle means being compliant, mild-mannered and complacent but someone who is gentle can still get quite angry when circumstances call for it. Remember Jesus when he cleared out the temple?

Gentleness, does not mean never getting angry. It means getting angry at the right time, in the right measure, and for the right reason. This is what is meant in Ephesians 4:26, which says, “Be angry, and do not sin.”

Patient
The word here can also be translated long-suffering. This word was used when explosives were invented having a long fuse. Dynamite has the power to destroy and annihilatebut the length of the fuse will determine how fast it explodes.

Here Paul calls us to have long fuses – the ability to bear insult and injury without bitterness and complaint.

All of us have power to cause a lot of destruction with our words and actions so we need to make sure we have a long fuse on our power. We are to exercise self-restraint, be self-controlled when provoked. We have a spirit which refuses to retaliate.

God’s patience toward us is the perfect example of patience. God, in His incredible patience works with us, and time after time forgives us. We should do so to others as well.

Bearing with one another
To bear with one another means to “put up with one another’s short comings.” It is like when parents put up with their children’s short comings because they love them andknow that they are maturing.

We are all work in progress. Nobody is perfect, not me, not you.

Love
This love is the unconditional, no-strings attached, unending, eternal agape love that Paul describes in 1 Corinthians 13. It is the kind of love God has for us.

If we love someone with agape love, it means that nothing he or she can do or does not do will make us seek anything but the highest good for them. It is the ability to love the unlovable, to love those who hate you and to love those who don’t want your love.

It is not an emotional love but a love bound to the will. It is the kind of love that keeps marriages going when the honeymoon is over. It is the kind of love that allows Christians to walk in unity.

We should do a heart-check once in a while using these fiveattitudes to find out whether we are living a life worthy of the calling we have received.

2. Celebrate our diversity
Unity is not uniformity – we are not robots or clones.
Biblical unity comes from within and is a spiritual grace, while uniformity is the result of pressure from without.

We come from different backgrounds with a multitude of gifts and abilities. Our differences are not removed but are blended by God and moulded into one. We complement one another and together we make the body of Christ whole and complete.

Ephesians 4:3, NIV
Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.

Verse 3a - Making every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit

Unity is not easy so we must be willing to work extra hard to maintain it. It is a word that a trainer of gladiators in Rome might have used when he sent one of his men to fight to the death in the coliseum: “Make every effort to stay alive today!”

Notice that Paul is not calling us to create or produce unity. He is telling us to keep what we already have in Christ! Unity is given to us by God when we become Christians, and it is simply our task to maintain it in the Spirit.

The phrase unity of the Spirit is just a way of saying that we are all one in the Spirit through the Holy Spirit who indwells us when we become Christians. When we partake of Holy Communion we are reminded that we all make up the loaf of bread.

Verse 3b - In the bond of peace

“Bond” refers to a ligament or a tendon. Tendons attach muscle to bone and ligaments attach bone to bone. From a physiotherapist’s point of view, if you had a choice between breaking a bone or tearing a ligament/tendon; choose to break bone even though it seems like a more painful and dramatic option to choose from. Why? Because they are much harder to heal than bone when damaged. [https://www.coreconcepts.com.sg/article/better-to-break-a-bone/]

The Holy Spirit has bonded all believers together, making us one in the family of God. As the Spirit of the Lord works in our lives we begin to bear the fruit of the Spirit which is love, joy, PEACE.

Peace with others begins with peace with God. If you are not at peace with God, there is no way you can be at peace with others. It is only when the peace of God rules in our hearts that we can build unity with one another (Col. 3:15; Jas. 3:13-4:10).

3Concentrate on what unites us.

The church is Ephesus was a diverse church made up of both Jewish and Gentile Christians. They struggled with being unified because they were so different.

In Ephesians 2, Paul called them to be at peace with each other. Now he tells them how. Instead of focusing on the differences that are between themthey should focus on what they have in common which will help them live in unity and love with one another.

We may have disagreements about what kind of music should be played or sung in church. We might have disagreements about how best to run the church. We might have disagreements about what to wear, what people can or cannot drink, what people can or cannot eat and what sort of activities we can or cannot do. Such things will always divide us. Let is focus instead on what we have in common.

Ephesians 4:4-6, NIV
4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

Our unity in the body of Christ rests upon the common bondthat we share as members of His body. All of the elements Paul mentions – one body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God, one Father – are the fruit of our relationship with God, freely given to us by His grace.

Unity in the church would be an absolute impossibility if it were solely up to us but a careful look will reveal that the Trinitarian God is the unifying factor. Unity in the biblical sense only comes when both parties or all individuals submit to the authority of God and confess the same thing that God says

If we focus only on your differences, there will never be peace. A humorous story sums this up.

Some years ago, the elders of a Dutch church decided to send some people over to America to check up on the moral condition of the churches here. The observers were horrified. They reported to the Dutch elders that American women wore makeup and wore expensive clothes. The Americans also drove big cars, had carpets in the sanctuaries, and had both a piano and an organ! As the Dutch elders heard this report, some of them burst into tears, and the tears ran down their cigars and into their beer.

Let’s not focus on what divides us. Let’s focus on the unity we have in Christ.

But note that there is one thing we cannot and must not sacrifice for the sake of unity. TRUTH is a non-negotiable.

The rule is, “In essentials, unity; in doubtful questions, liberty; in all things, charity.”

CONCLUSION

‘Unity’ in the body of Christ is critical if the body is to be healthy.  The body of Christ is like our physical bodies.  If all of the organs in a person’s body are not working together for the good of the whole then the body is going to be ill and hampered from optimal and full functionality as a result. Without ‘unity’ the body of Christ is ineffective for the Lord.

A unified church is also an incredible testimony to non-believers of God’s working in and through our lives. The unity and diversity of God's people is to reflect the perfect harmony of love and diversity of working in Persons of the Trinity. The Church thus reveals the glory of God.

‘Unity’ in the body of Christ is so important that in Jesus’ high priestly prayer for His disciples just before going to the cross was that His disciples then and on into the future might be “one.” He prayed:

"My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me." (John 17:20-23)

Unity pleases God and it is there that He commands His blessing (Psalm 133).

So is unity possible? Absolutely because it is of God. Unity is already ours. We only have to be diligent in preserving the bond of peace that the Holy Spirit has produced within us. It is our CHOICE to either keep (preserve) the unity or destroy it.

Destined for Greatness

Rev Jasmine

I'm going to get my PhD soon. Penang Hokkien Dialect. Here are the photos of my family. Here you see Josh, Chase, Chloe and Audrey. And this is Ken and Joy with Isaac. They say the reward for not killing your children are your grandchildren.

During the time of recession in Australia, God blessed my children with good jobs in Australia. Praise God.

Today's message is "You are Destined for Greatness" because you are a vessel God can use. Have you ever wondered who am I? What's my destiny? Why are you here for? How can I prepare to achieve my destiny? I used to ask this question. Especially sometimes when going through difficult times.

Am I really destined for greatness? The answer is a resounding yes. He wants you to be a part of his great plans. He handpicked you and all your experiences are to prepare you for his purpose which is to destined you for greatness. He destined us to have a great relationship with him. A fitting place in his great purposes in the world.

Ephesians 1:5
having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will,
Ephesians 1:11-12
11 In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will, 12 that we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of His glory.
Ephesians 1:17
that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him,
In love He predestined us to be adopted as His sons through Jesus in accordance with His pleasure and will …in order that we might be for the praise of His glory…He has given you the Spirit…so that you may know Him better.
That’s GREAT!

Romans 8:28-29
28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. 29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.

Verse 29 is where his agenda is to conform us into the image of his Son. We become who we worship. If we worship money we become hard and cold. But if we worship Jesus we become more like him.

What are you destined for? The fullness of what God wants you to be and do. God has a destiny for each one of us to fulfill. Greatness is not about position but about influence. He wants you to rise up to be able to influence others for him.

Acts 13:36
“For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell asleep, was buried with his fathers, and saw corruption;

See 1 Samuel 17

Like David, we are destined for greatness. David was great because he served God in his generation. How did David moved from being a humble shepherd to a king? There was definitely a process of building up his character.

David had the courage to face Goliath because he has had experiences with God. The process of being a king is by being a servant. He behaved wisely and was so well liked by everyone. True greatness is the more we come under people to lift them up, the more significant we become.

As coaches, we help people find their greatest destiny in God. That's what we want to do to help the leaders find their gifting.

Psalms 78:71-72
71 From following the ewes that had young He brought him,
To shepherd Jacob His people,
And Israel His inheritance.
72 So he shepherded them according to the integrity of his heart,
And guided them by the skillfulness of his hands.

God brought David to shepherd his people according to the integrity of his heart and with skilful hands. It is a destination. We need to get there so there is a preparation. David was prepared to achieve his destiny. The challenges will lead you to a place of greatness and influence. There will be defining moments and you will launch out in this faith journey.

What do we do to achieve our place of destiny? You move from your experiences. Challenges are your defining moments that will lead you to a place of greatness and influence.

To prepare you to achieve your destiny, you need:
  • Character
  • Competence
  • Courage

Character. It is moral qualities such as integrity.
Competence. We have to study to show ourselves approved of God.
Courage. Stepping outside your comfort zone to accept the challenge to serve as a leader. David couldn't wear Saul's armour and he was courageous enough to say no.

Every part of your life especially your soul needs to be connected with God. Like my children, I wanted them to be connected to God and I'll know they're safe. And they assured us God is with them. When your children grow up like that, with or without you I know they'll be fine.

What do you desire to become? Like to loose 10 kg? To grow spiritually? What is required? It requires passion. I saw at Queensbay "Turn your passion into fashion". What is that? Would it be better to turn your passion into vision? When you have a vision obstacles become opportunities and problems become potentials.

In our prayer meeting, we are going to be like David and chop off Goliath's head. We are going to make our enemies flee. There is a plan to succeed in God. There will of course be resistance. Like David his brother's scolded him and the people looked down on him. But he overcame the resistance. He had a plan. He went to pick up smooth stones. He went to get his weapons.

But I want to say we can also miss our destiny. Like the king who was jealous of David. He was insecure. His ego got the better of him.

What is true greatness? The first quality God saw in David was his spirituality. David had a servant's heart.  He was a shepherd but shepherds cannot enter the temple because they step on dung and dead animals. It was not a glamorous job.

1 Samuel 13:14
But now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought for Himself a man after His own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be commander over His people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.”

He served his father by tending sheep and he served King Saul.

1 Samuel 16:21
David came to Saul and stood before him. And he loved him greatly, and he became his armorbearer.

Jesus said the greatest among you shall be a servant.

Matthew 23:11
But he who is greatest among you shall be your servant.

Mark 10:43-45
43 Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant. 44 And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

The word "Ministry" comes from the root word diakonos meaning "a servant, waiter".

Like a waiter we are ready to serve. That's what it means to be a minister. God is so great yet he has a servant's heart. There's a paradigm shift called servant leadership that is becoming very popular. Servanthood is the secret to spiritual greatness.

The meaning and significance comes from expending our life. Not conserving it. God designed us to serve.

Matthew 16:25
For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.

The more we come "under" people so that we can lift them up, the more significance we end up having.  We are destined for greatness but we must prepare ourself to achieve our destiny.  We demonstrate true greatness by serving God and his people.

Pastor Ronald rounding up.

Donald Trump said let's make America great.

Deuteronomy 6:5
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.

The spirit of the law is a relationship with God. When you rule with relationship it will last a lot longer. Jesus repeated this commandment in Matthew 22:37.
