Crossing Borders with the Gospel

 Melinda Song

INTRODUCTION:

It is always a joy when Pastor asks me to preach. Then he told me that the topic was to be on missions. Today after his presentation on the Sarawak mission trip the pressure is on me to convince more of you to sign up for the mission trip!

As you know I love stories and there is no better story on missions than the one found in the little book of Jonah. Let us turn to . . .

Jonah 1:1-3 (NKJV) Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, 2 “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before Me.” 3 But Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.

The past week had been a hectic week for me. I had just come back from attending the APHAS in Bali when I had to make a trip to Kuala Lumpur. I flew down because it was an emergency but normally, I prefer to drive.

I love road trips for the flexibility it gives me. On the way I get excited whenever I cross a state border because it means I am getting nearer to my destination. My daughter on the other hand would not be able to identify her location along the highway. There was once I asked her where she was and she told me that she had just passed a Zhulian billboard!

However, there are other borders that I am not too keen to cross because I know they will make me feel awkward and uncomfortable. For example, we like to sit in the same place in church week in and week out. This morning it was not easy for Vive to get us to move out of our seats to shake the hands of our visitors. That is just a small border-crossing activity.

We don’t want to move out of our comfort zone but God’s mission compels us to cross borders.

Matthew 28:18-20 (NKJV) And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
Acts 1:8 (NKJV) But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

We have to cross borders to fulfill God’s mission and so I have entitled this message “Crossing Borders With The Gospel.”

The purpose of the book of Jonah is to showcase an exceeding compassionate God (God is gracious) and an exceedingly certain God (God is sovereign). And it begins with . . .

I. GOD’S COMMISSION

Jonah was the “son of Amittai” (1:1) and from 2 Kings 14.23-27 we know that Jonah prophesied during the reign of Jeroboam II in the Northern Kingdom. He came from a town called Gath-Hepher located 5 miles from Nazareth and he was a “celebrity” prophet who prophesied of Jeroboam’s expansion of the borders of Israel.

In verse 2, Jonah was re-commissioned. The terms “Arise,” “Go” and “Cry out” implies a master, a mission, and a message. Jonah’s commission was unusual because prophets prophesied to the people of Israel and proclaimed judgement against other nations from within the land of Israel. Jonah’s call would take him out of Israel, his comfort zone. However, Jonah’s love for the lost stopped at the borders of his nation.

APPLICATION:

What is God’s commission to us? It is found in Matt. 28:18-20 and Acts 1:8. In Acts 1:8 God was very specific in mentioning “Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth” because we often just stop short at our Jerusalem.

There are two misconceptions about missions:
1. Local missions is enough. We don’t have to bother about beyond our immediate community or city or state. Let the people there handle the missions there.
2. Missions must be global. If we don’t have to take a flight or trek through jungles it is not missions. You can be on missions, crossing the street or sharing with your neighbour.

Crossing borders is part of God’s mission because God is Lord over the nations.

Psalm 22.27-28 (NKJV) All the ends of the world
Shall remember and turn to the Lord,
And all the families of the nations
Shall worship before You.
28 For the kingdom is the Lord’s,
And He rules over the nations.

Psalm 46:10 (NKJV) Be still, and know that I am God;

I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!

Psalm 72:11 (NKJV) Yes, all kings shall fall down before Him;

All nations shall serve Him.

John Piper said, “Missions exist because worship does not” John P
iper. We serve a great God who deserves worship from all the nations. Many people refuse to accept that they are sinners. They fail to realize that as long as they have broken the first commandment they are already sinners.

I dread to think of what our destinies would be like if the early missionaries refused to come to Malaysia. In those days, India and China were the popular mission fields. The missionaries always bypassed the Malay archipelago. Then God sent the Communists to kick the missionaries out of China and they landed in Malaya. We thank God for what He has done.

II. JONAH’S RESPONSE

The natural response of a prophet who is a man of God should be to obey but Jonah ran from God’s commission (v.3).

WHY DID JONAH RUN?

a. Ethnocentrism – In sociology, it is the belief in the inherent superiority of one's own ethnic group or culture. For example, the Chinese consider other races to be barbarians and give derogatory names, such as “gwai lo” or “kek ling kwai”, to the Europeans and Indians.

The Europeans simply took over and colonized Africa when they saw the people in their loin cloths. In South Africa the Dutch justified apartheid based on Genesis 9:26. And no one can forget Hitler’s idea of Aryan superiority that led to the mass slaughter of millions of innocent people.

b. Fear - Niveveh symbolized cruelty, oppression, terrorism and godlessness to the Israelites. They practiced life dismemberment, flying and burning people alive, and enslavement.

Fear has never deterred missionaries for God. In the book “The Heavenly Man,” Brother Yun, shared the gospel despite being captured and tortured. We thank God for missionaries in India or Pakistan and other high-risk Muslim countries.

Not only did Jonah fear for his life but he also feared rejection by his own people as a traitor when he returned from his mission.

c.Selfishness – The Abrahamic promise is that the LORD would make them into a great nation so that they would be a blessing to all the families of the earth (cf. Gen.12:1-3). They are blessed to be a blessing but they thought about Yahweh as their own tribal god. In the ancient world it was very common to believe that the gods were territorial and that you might be able to escape their influence when you are no longer in their territory. There is no way to run from an omnipresent God but Jonah probably have had some bad theology.

To an Israelite sharing with their enemies would be a threat. Caring for their enemies would not be necessary. They are only interested in God blessing them and not their enemies. How would you feel if God were to ask you to share the gospel with your enemy or someone you don’t like? Can you imagine Chinese being sent to preach the gospel to a Japanese during the Japanese occupation? Is there someone you would not want to see in heaven.

I have a personal testimony. I had an aunt who caused my mother and sister a lot of misery. We avoided her most of the time but when she was ill and about to die, my sister and I prayed for her and shared the gospel with her. It was difficult for us and she never accepted the Lord. What would my reaction be if she did?

Jonah felt that it was too high a cost to go on God’s mission. Who or what is your Nineveh?

If we are honest, we don’t want to cross borders. FEAR is False Expectations/Evidences Appearing Real. When there is FEAR we Forget Everything And Run. That was what Jonah did.
No faith, no submission.

The above may be reasons that motivated Jonah’s flight but this is the reason given by Jonah . . .

d.God’s Character

Jonah 4:2 (NKJV) So he prayed to the Lord, and said, “Ah, Lord, was not this what I said when I was still in my country? Therefore I fled previously to Tarshish; for I know that You are a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, One who relents from doing harm.

Jonah knew the mission heart of God. He knew it in his head but not in his heart! By his actions Jonah is really saying, “Let them go to hell!” How big or how small is our heart? Does your heart beat like God’s?

I always get convicted whenever we sing songs like “Spirit touch your church,” especially when it comes to the part when we sing “I want to care for others like Jesus cares for me.” We often do not care for others the way Jesus cares for us.

We have problems crossing religious borders. When we share with the Buddhist that they must be born-again, they will agree and say, yes, we must be born again and again and again and again. We have trouble crossing ethnic borders. We find it difficult to eat on the floor when we are used to tables and chairs. We find that we are unable to get up after eating.

We have difficulty crossing geographical borders. We don’t fancy the long journey and the mountain trekking. We also find it difficult to cross socio-economic borders. On one hand, we cannot accept people who are poorer than us and on the other hand, we are intimidated by people who are wealthier than us or in authority over us. Do you know that the rich and the powerful also need Christ?

The prophet needed a shaking and God gave him a good shaking through the storm and put him into the belly of a fish to consider his ways. He finally realized that . . .

III. SALVATION IS OF THE LORD (Jonah 2:9)

Jonah was supposed to “cry out against it [Nineveh]; for their wickedness has come up before Me” (1:2b).

I was saved during a time when judgment of God was predominant message. The late seventies were the era of films like “Distant Thunder” and I remember waking up every morning and the first thing I would do is to check that my sister was still in her bed. That meant the rapture hadn’t occurred and I have not been left behind! Nowadays it is mostly sugar-coated messages of grace and love that we hear from the pulpit.

Very often we fail to understand that pronouncement of judgment is actually a work of grace. If you see a sign that says, “Bridge ends in 1 mile,” how would you respond? We would be glad that someone has warned us of danger. This is the same with warnings of judgments. People have to know of the danger in order for the good news of the gospel becomes good news to them.

We also fail to understand that we are called to share the gospel, not save the people. We do our part and leave God to do His part. During the APHAS, Dr John Edmund Haggai shared that someone asked him whether he wanted to see the whole world saved. He said, “No!” He understood the Great Commission to mean that the gospel has to be preached to the whole world. Not everyone will become a Christian but everyone must be given the opportunity to hear the gospel.

God gave Jonah a second chance! PTL! It is never too late to obey God.

Jonah 3:1-3a (NKJV) Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying, 2 “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach to it the message that I tell you.” 3 So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord.

Jonah 3:10 (NKJV) Then God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God relented from the disaster that He had said He would bring upon them, and He did not do it.

The shortest message on record led to a huge city-wide revival. Pastor Gideon would have been the happiest man on earth if he preached and the whole city of Penang turned to Christ. Jonah responded differently.

The Ninevites were very receptive to Jonah’s message because they were experiencing several military set-backs, followed by an earthquake and an eclipse of the son. The lesson here is that people are more receptive than we think.

I will always remember Bro. Koay’s testimony of how his brother would ask him whether he would like to accept the Lord whenever he came to visit. On one particular day Bro. Koay was ready to accept the Lord but that day his brother did not ask him whether he would receive Jesus. So always ask for a decision. You never know how God has been working in the person’s life.

Instead of rejoicing Jonah became angry.

Jonah 4:1 (NKJV) But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he became angry.

He was so angry with God for saving the Ninevites that he became suicidal.

Jonah 4:3-4 (NKJV) Therefore now, O Lord, please take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live!”
4 Then the Lord said, “Is it right for you to be angry?”

He again expressed anger and wished for death after the plant died.

Jonah 4:8-11 (NKJV) Then he wished death for himself, and said, “It is better for me to die than to live.”
9 Then God said to Jonah, “Is it right for you to be angry about the plant?”
And he said, “It is right for me to be angry, even to death!”
10 But the Lord said, “You have had pity on the plant for which you have not labored, nor made it grow, which came up in a night and perished in a night. 11 And should I not pity Nineveh, that great city, in which are more than one hundred and twenty thousand persons who cannot discern between their right hand and their left—and much livestock?”

Jonah was more concerned over his own comfort and the plant than the Ninevites.

God then explains why He had compassion on the people of Nineveh. First of all, it was not because they were deserving. God’s action was based on mercy to an undeserving people.

Second, His compassion on Nineveh had nothing to do with what the people did but more to do with what they are. They are numerous. Nineveh was the largest city in the world at that time and cities are full of crime because people do not know each other. However God is interested in reaching cities.

They are also needy. They “cannot discern between their right hand and their left.” According to some commentators God is referring to children but, as parents, we know that children are not morally innocent, and God had destroyed children and cattle before in the case of Sodom and Gomorrah. The phrase should be taken figuratively, to refer to people who don’t know right and wrong.

The emphasis is on the helplessness of the Ninevites. They are helpless, under the power of sin and unable to help themselves.

The LORD left Jonah and leaves us with a question, “Should not I pity Nineveh?” Rephrase the question with your Nineveh.

Jonah didn’t want to cross borders but Jesus crossed into a dangerous and hostile territory, to a people who rejected Him and killed Him.

Jesus received the commission and obeyed even unto death. He demands the same of us. There is no sacrifice he can ask of us that He has not made yet. We are never more like our Saviour than when we are bearing up under the challenges of extending border-crossing love to others.

A border crossing God will produce a border-crossing people. There is grace for past failures and power for future border-crossing in Christ. Ministry is not just being obedient to proclaim the gospel, but allowing Christ’s heart and compassion to bleed through us.

2Corinthians 5:14-15 (NKJV) For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; 15 and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again.

As we close today I have three application questions for us to prayerfully consider:

1. Who are the Ninevites that God has placed in your life? God may not be calling you to go overseas, or to become a full time missionary but He may be calling many of us to go across the street, or across the office, or across the canteen table to tell lost sinners that God has provided a way for them to be forgiven and brought back into relationship with Him.

2. Have you personally experienced the grace and compassion of God or are you still under his wrath? The Bible says that there are two kinds of people in this world – those who repent, place their faith in Jesus alone for salvation and experience forgiveness a personal relationship and peace with God, and those who refuse to repent and come under God’s righteous judgment. You can know this gracious and compassionate God today.

3.Is TOP a missional community? Too many churches have become little more than social clubs that exist only for the comfort of their membership.

Parable of a Lighthouse

On a dangerous seacoast where shipwrecks often occur there was once a crude little life-saving station. The building was just a hut, and there was only one boat, but the few devoted members kept a constant watch over the sea, and with no thought for themselves, they went out day or night tirelessly searching for the lost.
Many lives were saved by this wonderful little station, so that it became famous. Some of those who were saved, and various others in the surrounding areas, wanted to become associated with the station and give of their time and money and effort for the support of its work. New boats were bought and new crews were trained. The little life-saving station grew.

Some of the new members of the life-saving station were unhappy that the building was so crude and so poorly equipped. They felt that a more comfortable place should be provided as the first refuge of those saved from the sea.

They replaced the emergency cots with beds and put better furniture in an enlarged building. Now the life-saving station became a popular gathering place for its members, and they re-decorated it beautifully and furnished it as a sort of club.

Less of the members were now interested in going to sea on life-saving missions, so they hired life-boat crews to do this work.

The mission of life-saving was still given lip-service but most were too busy or lacked the necessary commitment to take part in the life-saving activities personally.

About this time a large ship was wrecked off the coast, and the hired crews brought in boat-loads of cold, wet and half-drowned people.

They were dirty and sick, and some of them had black skin, and spoke a strange language, and the beautiful new club was considerably messed up. So the property committee immediately had a shower house built outside the club where victims of shipwreck could be cleaned up before coming inside.

At the next meeting, there was a split in the club membership. Most of the members wanted to stop the club's life-saving activities as being unpleasant and a hindrance to the normal pattern of the club.
But some members insisted that life-saving was their primary purpose and pointed out that they were still called a life-saving station. But they were finally voted down and told that if they wanted to save the life of all various kinds of people who were shipwrecked in those waters, they could begin their own life-saving station down the coast. They did.

As the years went by, the new station experienced the same changes that had occurred in the old. They evolved into a club and yet another life-saving station was founded.
If you visit the seacoast today you will find a number of exclusive clubs along that shore. Shipwrecks are still frequent in those waters, but now most of the people drown!

What is TOP’s logo?

It is a lighthouse. I remember three words that are pasted on the mirror of our church when it was located in Jalan Mas – “Souls! Souls! Souls!” Our theme song was “Send the Light.” TOP’s mission is to be a lighthouse to the community, Penang, Malaysia and to the end of the earth.

When Jesus Comes Looking For Us

Rev Gideon Lee

During a visit to the mental asylum a visitor asked the Director what the criterion was which defined whether or not a patient should be institutionalized.
"Well" said the Director "we fill up a bathtub then we offer a teaspoon a teacup and a bucket to the patient and ask him or her to empty the bathtub."
"Oh I understand" said the visitor. "A normal person would use the bucket because it's bigger than the spoon or the teacup."
"No." said the Director "A normal person would pull the plug. Do you want a bed near the window?"

John 13:31-38
Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial
13: 37 38pp – Mt 26: 33- 35 Mk 14: 29- 31 Lk 22: 33 34
31 When he was gone Jesus said “Now is the Son of Man glorified and God is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him God will glorify the Son in himself and will glorify him at once.
33 “My children I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me and just as I told the Jews so I tell you now: Where I am going you cannot come.
34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you so you must love one another. 35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples if you love one another.”
36 Simon Peter asked him “Lord where are you going?”
Jesus replied “Where I am going you cannot follow now but you will follow later.”
37 Peter asked “Lord why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”
38 Then Jesus answered “Will you really lay down your life for me? I tell you the truth before the rooster crows you will disown me three times!

John 21:1-19
Jesus and the Miraculous Catch of Fish

1 Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples by the Sea of Tiberias. It happened this way: 2 Simon Peter Thomas (called Didymus) Nathanael from Cana in Galilee the sons of Zebedee and two other disciples were together. 3 “I’m going out to fish” Simon Peter told them and they said “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat but that night they caught nothing.
4 Early in the morning Jesus stood on the shore but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.
5 He called out to them “Friends haven’t you any fish?”
“No” they answered.
6 He said “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.
7 Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say “It is the Lord” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. 8 The other disciples followed in the boat towing the net full of fish for they were not far from shore about a hundred yards. 9 When they landed they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it and some bread.
10 Jesus said to them “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.”
11 Simon Peter climbed aboard and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish 153 but even with so many the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came took the bread and gave it to them and did the same with the fish. 14 This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.
Jesus Reinstates Peter
15 When they had finished eating Jesus said to Simon Peter “Simon son of John do you truly love me more than these?”
“Yes Lord” he said “you know that I love you.”
Jesus said “Feed my lambs.”
16 Again Jesus said “Simon son of John do you truly love me?”
He answered “Yes Lord you know that I love you.”
Jesus said “Take care of my sheep.”
17 The third time he said to him “Simon son of John do you love me?”
Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time “Do you love me?” He said “Lord you know all things you know that I love you.”
Jesus said “Feed my sheep. 18 I tell you the truth when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted but when you are old you will stretch out your hands and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” 19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him “Follow me!”

Note Jesus' last command to Peter was "Follow me!"

All of us know that what Jesus predicted came true, that Peter denied Jesus three times.

Jesus spent 85% of His ministry at these parts of Galilee. The North West corner of the lake. The author of the book of John probably also knew that Jesus knew this spot like the back of his hand.

The fishes often congregate at this area. A few of these men went fishing all night and got nothing. Remember an incident when Jesus called the disciples? They were busy fishing then. Jesus won't call lazy people. Jesus said they would be Fishers of Men and called them to "follow me".

This is almost the same kind of circumstances. As the story goes, they caught nothing like the Sunday school song. Here the bible says early in the morning, Jesus stood at the shore and the disciples didn't realise it was Him.

Jesus told them to throw the net on the other side. Remember they didn't know it was Jesus and the moment they threw the net and saw the fishes, John immediately said it must be Jesus.

Some bible scholars said they went back to fishing because they were disillusioned and went back to their familiar trade. Some of them may say that they don't know what to do next so they did the only thing that they knew best, which was fishing.

Jesus was the last person Peter wants to meet. He was down and at a low period of his life. He denied Jesus and was probably feeling bad. But the moment John said it was Jesus, Peter put on his clothes immediately and just jumped into the water and went towards Jesus. That did not make sense right? Why wear your clothes when you are about to get wet going into the water?

This is because at that time you wear proper attire to meet someone important.

Jesus was barbequing then. He had the coals burning with some fishes and bread. The bible was very detailed in this passage. Do you know why? The writer was trying to dispel a heresy that Jesus actually resurrected bodily.

Remember Jesus asked the disciples to touch His nail pierced hands and His speared side. He wanted to dispel the rumour that He was just a hungry ghost floating around.

They had large fishes but the net didn't break. The bible said it was 153 fishes. Why 153? Some scholars had all kinds of suggestions but the best ones I have come across is the man called Jerome. He said that at that time in that region there were 153 known species. What he is trying to say is that the gospel net is for everyone. And that the net did not break. The good news is for everyone, every tongue, nation and tribe.

This is Peter's re-commissioning. Jesus asked him "do you love me?" Other things have become Peter's priorities and Jesus wanted him to re-prioritise. Jesus asked him a question that all of us have to answer. "Do you love me?" He asked Peter do you love me more than all these things.

The emotion was not mentioned in this passage. Remember Peter had denied Jesus and he was an emotional wreck but the fact that Jesus asked him three times, Peter had to confront this choice. Peter needs to know himself that he love Jesus. This was for the three times Peter denied Jesus. For every denial, Jesus reassured Peter. Isn't our Lord good?

He never condemned Peter nor pointed out Peter's error. He didn't beat him down and condemn him. Our God is good.

Firstly, we learn that Jesus loved Peter.

When he needed love most, Jesus gave Peter love. Peter needed God's love and Jesus knew that. Jesus seek Peter out. He went to the shore to look for Peter.

A man went to a doctor to have his stitches removed but he needed the stitches to be removed quickly as he had a 9.00 am appointment. The doctor was removing the stitches and started a conversation and asked the man what was so important he had to go for the appointment. He said he has an appointment with his wife and have kept that appointment every day for the last five years. She has Alzheimer's so can no longer recognise him. The doctor then asked the man why he bother since she no longer knows him? He replied, "yes, but I know her and I love her."

Even when we did not know Jesus, He loved us.

The second things is forgiveness.

Peter needed forgiveness. In all other religion it is about doing this and that. But here we see Jesus offered forgiveness not just love.

Remember the prodigal son? To live amongst the pig for the Jews is the lowest of the lowest. When he came to his senses and went back to his father, he did not condemn or punish him but ran to greet the son. No self respecting Jewish man will do that. He saw his son and hugged his smelly and stinking son. That was what Jesus did for us. Jesus offers you forgiveness. I don't know what you have done and you may think its horrible but I want you to know, Jesus offers you forgiveness and redemption.

The last thing is Jesus offers you direction.

What was Jesus' response every time. Feed my sheep. Jesus gave Peter clear instruction. The last word Jesus spoke to Peter was the same as His first instruction to Peter "follow me". God's instruction have not changed. To all of us it is "follow me". Jesus said if you love me feed my lamb.

The true test comes in loving God is loving his people. Are we doing that? Tough question yes?

How many of you are serving in this church. We need to be serving in one capacity or another in this church. You need to be serving in one Ministry at least. My goal is to see all of us serving in one ministry at least. Statistically it shows us that 20% is serving the 80% of the church. Wouldn't it be wonderful if it is the other way around?

Let us serve one another, caring and serving one another. A new commandment the Lord gave to all of us "Love one another" and the bible says "by this all men will know you are my disciples." Tough yes? You may tell me you don't like a person. It's okay you don't have to like the person, just love him.

Wise Men and Women Worship Christ in Wise Ways

Pastor Jerry Eng (Klang Baptist Church)

Matthew 2:1-13
The Visit of the Magi
1 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea during the time of King Herod Magi from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him.”
3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed and all Jerusalem with him. 4 When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law he asked them where the Christ was to be born. 5 “In Bethlehem in Judea” they replied “for this is what the prophet has written:
6 “ ‘But you Bethlehem in the land of Judah
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah
for out of you will come a ruler
who will be the shepherd of my people Israel. ’ ’”
7 Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. 8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said “Go and make a careful search for the child. As soon as you find him report to me so that I too may go and worship him.”
9 After they had heard the king they went on their way and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star they were overjoyed. 11 On coming to the house they saw the child with his mother Mary and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh. 12 And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod they returned to their country by another route.
The Escape to Egypt
13 When they had gone an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up” he said “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”

I want to look at Chapter 2 where the wise men came to seek Jesus and to worship him.

Many years ago, our church had a renovation and my family and I stayed at a house opposite the church. I saw a lorry parked at the front of the church and to my horror I saw two men collect sacks of pebbles. I saw two bags already loaded in the lorry. When I asked them what are they were doing, they quickly said they had permission from my supervisor to collect these pebbles. Then they quickly packed to leave and even said that they are collecting the pebbles to path their temples.

I am wondering what God will allow them to steal to build their temple?

Where did these wise men came from? The bible tells us they were from far away guided only by a star. You must remember they have no four wheel drive at that time. No GPS either. They were on camels and if you know camels, they are very stubborn animals. They travelled in the dessert. There were sand storms and the nights were cold and days were hot. No perhentian like our highways. No rest stops to quench their thirst or to get a coke. And they were bringing gifts and were at risk of being robbed in the dessert.

But they braved it all to come to worship the Lord. (I salute the teachers here in this church and I pray the Lord bless you as you take on the challenges of being a teacher.)

In Bethlehem, it was mentioned four times as the "House of bread". If you go to the house of bread, what do you find? You find bread and this was the way God had intended it as Jesus is the Bread of Life.

They discovered that Bethlehem was not just a place, but that it was prophesied that Bethlehem is THE place, but it is unfortunate that the people who are in Bethlehem were not the ones that worshipped him. The religious people did not bother at all even though they knew the prophesy well.

Jesus said He will come to give abundant life but we Chinese especially equate abundance with prosperity, with the symbol of a "S" and two strokes. That is not what Jesus meant. Abundance is more than money, it is a life of holiness that God enable us to live. And with it comes challenges, so do not think it's just a bed of roses once you give your life to Jesus.

Seek out Jesus to worship Him.

True worship seeks out our motives and agenda. The wise men came and consulted King Herod. No wonder King Herod was disturbed. He was considered the King at Bethlehem. King Herod had ten wives and he was willing to kill one of his wife and his mother (mother-in-law) just to be sure he is King. So with these men coming looking for a king he was rightly disturbed. Did the wise men know about his character? We are not sure but they did not bear gifts to King Herod. Only to King Jesus.

We are all guilty of things, where we failed to seek Him. We come home and skip our devotion with our family because it was a long day and is tired. We skip once, then another and another. Or prayer meeting. We promise to come but excuses like traffic jam, being tired or having to work late crops up. Our intentions are good but we still don't do it. Or using the company phone to call your cell members, or to photostat cell notes using the office copier. Let's check ourselves.

The star went ahead of them. And they were filled with joy knowing that God had set the star to lead them. It is a real joy, bubbling in their hearts, literally. They were rejoicing with a great joy, a joy with hilarity and that's worship. A mark of celebration and joy. But is it just like what we did on Sunday morning only? The act of worship is 24 hours. What we do at anytime, anywhere is an act of worship. If worship is boring it is because it is self centred. Don't get me wrong there is a place to pray for our own needs but if you look at the Lord's prayer "hallowed be your name" it is God centred first. Let us learn that. That was how the wise men worshipped God.

Worship ought to be reverential.

When the wise men reached the tent, they fall down to worship Him. We can only worship God and exalt Him when we are down there and He is up there. We will do well to examine our heart's attitude with deep respect, honour and reverential.

True worship is sacrificial.

The wise men instantaneously opened their chest to offer their gifts without hesitation. All their actions were one smooth flow of sequence with no hesitation. They brought Gold for the King, Frankincense for Christ as God and Myrrh as an incense to the suffering redeemer. They were well prepared. Good preparation honours God.

How did we prepare for worship this morning? How many of you watched football last night? What time did it ended? How you wish you can sleep late right? Or families with many children and they came late as the children were not able to get ready in time. Why? Because they didn't sleep well. Why? Because you took them out late last night. We need to prepare for worship, one hour before going to church they should be awake. Or we adults? Aiyoh, pastor's preaching again. Or we complain about a speaker pastor invited. Boring. Remember it is all about God.

True worship is obedience.

They departed from Jerusalem to Bethlehem in response to God leading. They followed the star God set. They didn't question.

How then do we worship?

Christianity is not about just doing. It is not just based on a set of instructions. We do because He first did it. We love because He first love us.

Romans 12:1 Therefore I urge you brothers in view of God’s mercy to offer your bodies as living sacrifices holy and pleasing to God–this is your spiritual act of worship.

We are to give ourselves. When we do that we have no problem about our time, talent and our money. The last one is very sensitive. I won't talk about that. I'll let your pastor do that.

2 Corinthians 8:9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ that though he was rich yet for your sakes he became poor so that you through his poverty might become rich.
Please note the rich again is not just about money okay? When we give ourselves to the Lord the rest will follow.

Talents are something we Asians don't handle very well. We tend to compare. When a son scores 98 we ask why not 100? Or we ask how much your friends got? Why do we need to do that? We must be careful. God give talents to individuals for His purpose.

True worship disturbs us. It is said "we comfort the afflicted to afflict us". We will not offer an offering to the Lord that cost us nothing. We don't have to steal pebbles. This is not our God. We bring what is in our heart.

V2
"Where is he who has been born King of the Jews? We saw his star and have come to worship him!”
One question in 12 verses,
The rest is the act of worship!

David:
“I will not offer burnt offerings to the Lord my God that would cost me nothing!”

When I survey the wondrous cross,
On which the Prince of glory died.
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.

Forbid it Lord, that I should boast,
Save in the death of Christ my God
All the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to his blood.

See, from his head, his hand, his feet,
Sorrow and love flow mingled down
Did ever such love and sorrow meet,
Or thorns compose so rich a crown?

Were the whole realm of nature mine,
that were an offering far too small
Love so amazing so divine.
Demands my soul, my life, my all.

Hearing God

Rev Gideon Lee

Mark 7:31-37
The Healing of a Deaf and Mute Man
7: 31- 37pp – Mt 15: 29- 31
31 Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre and went through Sidon down to the Sea of Galilee and into the region of the Decapolis. 32 There some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk and they begged him to place his hand on the man.
33 After he took him aside away from the crowd Jesus put his fingers into the man’s ears. Then he spit and touched the man’s tongue. 34 He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him “Ephphatha!” (which means “Be opened!”). 35 At this the man’s ears were opened his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly.
36 Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone. But the more he did so the more they kept talking about it. 37 People were overwhelmed with amazement. “He has done everything well” they said. “He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”

Note that deafness will also affect your speech. Once he could hear, he could talk normally.

One day there were three retiree advanced in age. The first one says "today is a windy day". The second man said "no today is Thursday". And the third man says "Yes me too. Let's go get a coke." (Laughs)

Most of the time we learn because we hear. Because this man is deaf he has problem with his speech. This man had an encounter with Jesus and He healed him.

Many times everyone can hear, yet not understand. I want to talk a little about our ear.

How many of you know about our roti man. He comes and ring a bell and shout roti roti. That is how we know he's here.

But in the old days the peddler shouts "what do you lack"? Then you can go see the many stuff he has that can meet your household needs. In this case the lack of this man is hearing. I want to ask you this morning, what do you lack?

We have ears to hear but many of you may not understand. Listening is a skill. To be a good counsellor the first prerequisite is to be a good listener. It is a skill that can be taught.

Teachers will know this. "Class are you listening?" And the students will always answer "yes!". It is a skill that can be acquired and we need to become better listeners in church. Someone said that's why God gave us two ears and one mouth.

The problem is we like to talk. But before I talk about this I want to talk about your ears.

You have no choice with what you hear. With your eyes or mouth it is easy to control. You just close your eyes or mouth. The bible says faith comes from hearing. The gospel is being shared and it comes to us by hearing. Your ears hear everything. You cannot be walking around with your hands over your ears.

In a coffee shop I sometimes hear the people talk vulgarity loudly and I have no choice but to hear everything. If I am to censor their speech, you will hear lots of beeps. The other thing is smoking. They will light up before and after their meal. The only time they don't smoke is when they are eating. Okay, back to hearing. Our ears hears a lot of stuff, good and bad. And the bible says we need to guard our ears.

Jesus said if any man has an ear let him hear what the spirit is saying. Because they can hear what He is saying but not catch the truth.

We see here in this passage about the man who couldn't hear. The people brought this man whose speech was impaired. Children learn how to speak through their ears. It was this man's inability to hear that caused his speech impairment. In those days hearing is very important. Today vision is more important. Today, our world is very visual. The advent if the TV changed the way we learn things. We can know what is happening by reading the papers. Back in those days hearing was very important to understand what was happening. Today it is easier for us.

Jesus healed this man in a very strange way. Don't do that unless God speaks to you. This man lived in a silent world. And Jesus was very concern for this man. Jesus is also very concern about us today. He wants us to also hear him spiritually. This morning God is able to heal us too so that our spiritual ears will be opened to hear him.

It is also very important what you are hearing today.

There was this native Indian American who went to New York city, a bustling city. And he told his friend "I hear a cricket". But his friend said no I didn't hear anything and to prove it, he found the cricket in a bush. Today, what are we tuned in to? He could hear the cricket in the hustle and bustle because he is tuned in to it. That's why he could hear it.

All of you close your eyes and I'm going to make a sound and you tell me what is the sound. (Pastor shook a bottle filled with coins). How many of you immediately know it is the sound of money. We are tuned in to money. If you walk the streets and a coin drop you will immediately recognise it. We are so tuned in to money but are you tuned in to God?

Samuel as a young boy when God spoke to him, he ran to Eli thinking it was Eli. Samuel could not recognise the voice of God until the third time and suddenly his spiritual ears were opened. Then he said to the Lord "you speak and your servant listen". But today it is we speak God listen.

If we turn our ears to God, He has a lot to say to us. It's just that often we don't like what we hear. I pray we learn to say "Lord speak, your servant listen".

This man was not faulted because he was not able to hear physically. Sadly we have ears and not hear. It is not that we have ears, it is about us hearing. Listening to God, we are strengthened, encouraged, guided. Let us open up our ears to hear what God is saying.

I pray that we will tune in to what is important. And hear what God is saying to us.

Can you imagine what it's like for this man to have his hearing? For the first time he could hear the bird chirping or what his friends were saying or the sounds in the streets.

His world opened up and he could for the first time learn to talk and understand many many things. When our ears are spiritually opened, things around us becomes very real. We will see things very differently around us. We will see people very differently too.

Let me tell you another story. A family went to a restaurant to eat. A waiter came and asked what do they want to eat. The son said I want a burger, fries and a coke. Then the mother said no, give him milk, sandwich and salad instead. But the waiter ignored the mother and asked the boy "how do you like your burger with ketchup? Your coke with ice or no ice and your fries salted or not salted?" The waiter heard the boy, the mother didn't. This is a classic example why they say children are meant to be seen not heard.

What do we hear here at TOP? Are we listening to the needs of our community? To be relevant as a church we need to listen.

I want to end with this story. God was disheartened with Adam and Eve when they fell and that He had to drive them out of the garden of Eden. The angels in heaven saw that God was so sad because He thinks that His children didn't know how much God loves them. So the angel said to themselves, we will be guardian angels to them and whisper in the ears of every child born that "God loves you". So for many many years, an angel will whisper to a newborn child "God loves you".

But over the years, the noise of the cares of this world begins to drown out the whispers of the Angels. The neons and noise and distractions were so loud that the angels voices could no longer be heard.

That is why God sent His son to the cross where Jesus said "It is finished". He demonstrated His love by sending Jesus and I pray that you will not just hear but understand it with your heart. God loves you.

When Prayers go "Unanswered"

Rev Gideon Lee

Deuteronomy 3:21-29
Moses Forbidden to Cross the Jordan
21 At that time I commanded Joshua: “You have seen with your own eyes all that the Lord your God has done to these two kings. The Lord will do the same to all the kingdoms over there where you are going. 22 Do not be afraid of them the Lord your God himself will fight for you.”
23 At that time I pleaded with the Lord: 24 “O Sovereign Lord you have begun to show to your servant your greatness and your strong hand. For what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do the deeds and mighty works you do? 25 Let me go over and see the good land beyond the Jordan–that fine hill country and Lebanon.”
26 But because of you the Lord was angry with me and would not listen to me. “That is enough” the Lord said. “Do not speak to me anymore about this matter. 27 Go up to the top of Pisgah and look west and north and south and east. Look at the land with your own eyes since you are not going to cross this Jordan. 28 But commission Joshua and encourage and strengthen him for he will lead this people across and will cause them to inherit the land that you will see.” 29 So we stayed in the valley near Beth Peor.

I have been a Christian a long time. How many of you have been a Christian for at least 5 years, 10 years, 15 years, 20 years, 25 years, 30 years and more than 30 years? Wow, praise the Lord. I have not walked with Him that long as I'm only 25 (laughs). How many of you know as we walk with God, we have mountaintop experience and also the valleys. I am going to talk to you about one of the toughest things we faced when following God.

I don't think there is anything that causes more discouragement, anger and frustrations than this.

Why is it sometimes prayer work and sometimes prayer don't work. I have prayed for people to be healed and they die. I have prayed for broken marriages and it didn't work.

A Jew went to the wailing wall to pray for the last 50 years, praying for the Jews and the Arabs to be at peace and a reporter asked how he feel, praying for so many years and the Jews and Arabs are still against each other? And he said he felt like he is talking to a wall.

Sometimes that's how I feel when I prayed and God seems so far away. As a Christian we all go through that. How come sometimes prayer works and sometimes it don't. This morning I want to say this: God answers prayer.

Jeremiah 33:3
‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.’

I want to tell you this, if you are a child of God and have walked with him faithfully, the only unanswered prayers are the ones you never prayed.

The problem is that the prayer God answers you don't like it. How does God answers us?

YES
The first is Yes. How often you find a new Christian prayed for something and God answers his prayer so quickly. But as he matures you find his prayer are no longer answered as promptly and may not even be answered. There is a reason why.
WAIT
We have no problems when God says yes to us. The problem creeps in when God says wait.

God sometimes says its a yes but not now. He wants to say yes to you but you have to wait. I thank God that in my walk with Him, 80 to 90% of the time God says yes to me.

Sometimes when we ask our parents for things, before we start we get a no for an answer. Sometimes my children will ask me things and they know I will say no but sometimes I surprise them with a yes. We don't always say yes because we know what is best for them. God has a yes phase.

Why do you think God says wait? Because He make all things beautiful in His time. All things. Not according to my time or your time or the church board's time but the sovereign God's time because He knows ALL things.

Sometimes we ask for things but God knows you are not ready. God will not withhold good things from you but sometimes He will say wait.

I give you an example. How many of you learn to ride your bike or drive your car before you got your licence? Don't put up your hands. I learnt to ride a bike at Form One. I stayed at a Chinese kampung and I really enjoyed myself growing up there going to the drain and catch fish running around naked and climbing trees. We would block up the drain and literary scoop out the water and there will be lots of fishes. Some of my friends will be naked save for their underwear.

Everybody in the kampung seems to know how to ride a bike. There was this girl, I think she's just 11 or 12 and she'll be riding around the kampung at an empty field. She was riding one day I saw her driving at full throttle. At a bend, she went one way and the bike the other and she fell off the bike. It was a painful lesson for her. Yes she can ride a bike but she was not ready to ride it responsibly.

Sometimes we are like that. We don't like to wait right? How many of you like to wait for your Char Koay Teow? We don't like it cos we have 2 minute noodles and fast food. But God sometimes says wait.

NO
But what we really really don't like is when God says no. We don't like it. But I want you to know, when God says no, He still answers prayer. When He says no, without a shadow of a doubt it is always for your good.

Let me give you an example. Looking at my wife and my three and a half children, how many of you know I'm expecting number four? Made in Penang. Sometimes Christians ask me "you want to compete with Abraham is it?". Or they ask Me "Lu bo kang cho ar" (you are so free in Penang nothing to do is it?) This really gets to me. Ok, where was I?

When I look at my children, I thank God that he said no to me on my ex-girlfriend. If He had said yes to me I won't be standing here today. I have a wife who love me and love God and I have beautiful children. Because my ex-girlfriend is a non Christian. Do you know I married my
ex-girlfriend? Because she is my wife now.

His ways are always better than your way and His thoughts higher than your thoughts. So if God says no to you don't get angry with God. Please understand it is always for your own good and He has a better plan for you.

Do you know about Paul's thorn in the flesh? Remember Paul asked God three times for God to remove it from him but God says no to Paul. Instead God said His grace is sufficient for him. God gave him his strength and patience and grace to carry him through.

We have a tunnel vision. But God sees the beginning and the end. He is the alpha and the omega. He can see the end. God has a panoramic view, the beginning and the end and what happens in the middle He knows. God has a better plan for you.

FOR HIS GLORY
Last but not least, when he says no, not only is it for our good and a better plan for us, but also for His glory. He said no to Moses. What did Moses do? God said command the stone but he struck it with his staff twice. Because of this small thing God says He will not lead the people into the promise land but Joshua. He longs after 40 years in the wilderness to enter the promise land. How many of you like to go on a road trip for 40 years and not reach your destination?

Moses pleaded with God to just step foot on the land but God said no. He told
Moses no and told him no more about this. He took him up a mountain and showed him the promise land but he will not lead the people there. God has His plan.

Look at Jesus praying in the garden of Gethsamane more than 2,000 years ago. He prayed so intensively that blood came out of his sweat. I asked my doctor friends and they say it is possible when we are under extreme pressure, when the blood vessel break under our skin. He was under extreme pressure knowing he was going to the cross. What he could not face was that every sin would be on Jesus.

Jesus understood that as a sacrificial lamb it will be the first time He would be cut off from the Father. His prayer of the night is "if it be possible let this cup pass from me". If there is another way, but I thank God he ended with this - but not my will but your will be done. He understood His responsibility. Aren't you glad that God said no to His son? It is because God said no that we are seated here today.

This morning when God says no it is for His glory. We may not understand but it is for His glory. Don't get angry when, as your pastor I may say no. I am not God but sometimes I may have to say no. Please give me room to say no.

Faith in God is not just when God answers our prayer but when we still believe in Him even when He says no.

God's Work by God's Power
